Yamaha's New Blu-Ray Disc Player

Yamaha has just announced a new Blu-Ray player that, to the best of my knowledge, is the first player to offer "Deep Color" ouput.

The BD-S2900 should start shipping out to vendors later on this month and with the fairly hefty asking price of $1199.95. Man.. do I at least get a free HDMI cable and some popcorn with that? Maybe a root beer or something?

Jokes and high price point aside, this is pretty cool news. Deep color, if you aren't familiar, is a new level of color output that can only be brought to you by Blu-Ray discs and deep color compatible TVs. You can thank HDMI 1.3 for making it possible. HDMI version 1.3 allows for HUGE amounts of information to be passed from your video source to your TV. That means that there are millions of shades of color that we've never seen produced on a TV before just now coming available. The result should be a more realistic, vibrant picture-who doesn't want that?

This player is built on the same high quality chassis style that Yammy's high end receivers offer and likely features some premium internal components. Of course, it should also do a great job of upscaling all of your standard DVDs to look great on that fancy new flat panel TV of yours. Still, the price tag is a little on the high side for me and probably most attractive to those of you who live in the "early adopter" camp.

I applaud Yamaha for coming out with such a gorgeous piece of electronics. As soon as they make it affordable, I'm in. Unless some other manufacturer beats them to the punch.

CEDIA '08- I'm going to be there!

I wanted to quickly announce that I'll be attending the CEDIA '08 show being held September 3-7, 2008 in Denver Colorado this year. I intend to make it a "live blog" event where I post photos and comments just moments after visiting various displays. I intend to be first to press with a lot of fun news and photos of the latest, greatest gear. Be sure to subscribe or bookmark this blog if you're interested. I promise some very cool content!

Also, I wanted to take a moment to publicly mourn the loss of musician Leroi Moore. It is always sad to see someone cut down in their prime-especially when it seems unnecessary. All the reports I've read indicate that he passed from "complications" related to injuries sustained during an ATV accident on June 30th. While I generally loathe speculation, I do worry that this could be due to overlooked internal injuries. Maybe he shouldn't have been discharged so soon or maybe someone missed something? It just seems like the people handling the PR on this incident (including text on the DMB website) are sticking to some pretty strict rhetorric.

Regardless of the cause, his early death is a tragedy. Even though I was not what most would call a "fan", it is clear that he has touched thousands, if not millions, of lives with his sound. He has accomplished what many musicians only dream of. Rest Easy, Leroi. Your legacy will live on.

Testing...Testing...uhhhhm???

Welcome to my first independant blog post. I'm stoked, can you tell? Thanks for bothering to read what is essentially an extremely verbose test.

So what can you expect to see here? Well, lots of stuff. My focus is going to be on dishing out news on the latest and greatest in gadgets, home entertainment, home theater PCs, witty sarcasm, a little music here and there and some occassional "field reporting"

My intention is to become a trusted resource of information when it comes to researching your next big electronics purchase. There's a lot of hype and misunderstanding oft-perpetuated by marketing folks (sorry guys) and I'm here to help separate the wheat from the chaff.

I invite you to subscribe and comment. Your feedback will always be appreciated- except when it sucks.. in which case it won't be appreciated very much at all ;-)
